Why Super Mario Maker?

Super Mario Maker is a creative platform game that allows players to design, play, and share their own Mario levels. Instead of only playing levels designed by developers, players are given the tools to create their own courses using enemies, blocks, power-ups, and many other familiar objects from the Mario series. The game celebrates the long history of Mario platform games by allowing players to build levels using several different visual styles inspired by classic titles.

The original version of Super Mario Maker was released for the Nintendo Wii U, and later a version called Super Mario Maker for Nintendo 3DS was released for the Nintendo 3DS system. While both versions share the same basic idea of creating and playing Mario levels, there are some important differences between them.

The Wii U version is generally considered the main version of the game. One of its biggest strengths is the level creation system. Using the Wii U GamePad touchscreen, players can easily drag and drop items onto the stage. This makes building levels feel smooth and intuitive, almost like drawing on a digital canvas. Players can experiment with placing enemies, pipes, moving platforms, and many other objects.

The Wii U version also allows players to design levels using multiple visual styles based on classic Mario games. These include the looks of Super Mario Bros., Super Mario Bros. 3, Super Mario World, and New Super Mario Bros. U. Each style changes how the game looks and feels while still letting players create creative and interesting courses.

Another major feature of the Wii U version is online level sharing. Players can upload their creations to the internet so other players around the world can try them. In addition, players can browse and play thousands of courses made by other people. This feature gives the game nearly endless replay value because new levels are constantly being added.

The Nintendo 3DS version includes the same basic building tools and gameplay mechanics, but there are some limitations compared to the Wii U version. The level editor still works well on the 3DS touchscreen, allowing players to place objects and build levels in a similar way. However, the biggest difference is that the 3DS version does not allow players to upload their levels online for others to download.

Instead, the 3DS version focuses more on local sharing. Players can share levels with nearby friends through local wireless connections. While this still allows players to exchange courses, it greatly reduces the massive online community that made the Wii U version so exciting.

The 3DS version does include many pre-made levels that players can try. These built-in courses provide plenty of challenges and examples of creative level design. For players who mainly want to play levels rather than create them, this can still provide a lot of entertainment.

Another difference is that the Wii U version has more online features, such as searching for popular levels or exploring different categories of player-created courses. These features help players discover creative or challenging levels from around the world.

Visually, both versions look similar because they share the same art styles. However, the Wii U version generally runs on a larger screen and can feel easier to view when designing complicated levels. The 3DS version is portable, which means players can create or play levels anywhere.

The music and sound effects in both versions are cheerful and familiar. Each visual style includes classic Mario sounds that longtime fans will recognize. These details help give the game a strong sense of nostalgia.

Despite the differences between versions, the core idea of creative level design remains fun in both games. Players can experiment with unusual enemy placements, tricky jumps, or clever puzzles. Some players enjoy designing traditional Mario-style levels, while others create wild or humorous challenges.

However, the game also has a few drawbacks.

Because the game allows anyone to design levels, not every level is well designed. Some courses may feel unfair or confusing. This is more noticeable in the Wii U version due to its large online library of levels.

Additionally, designing complicated courses can take time and practice. New players might need a while to fully understand how different objects interact.

The 3DS version’s lack of full online sharing is also a significant limitation for players who want their levels to reach a large audience.

How We Test Games

For testing games we use a Nintendo Switch firmware version 2H. Hardware includes Joy-con and Pro controller on a large screen TV. Tests are done with up to 5 players. We take turns playing and evaluating games.

Whenever possible we play multiple players. We also use a Nintendo 2DS, DS XL, and for PC games we use a Ryzen 7 1700x CPU, AMD RX580, running on Win 10. This game is up to 1-player on one Nintendo 2DS/3DS and Wii U.

Pros

Powerful level creation tools.

Multiple visual styles from classic Mario games.

Encourages creativity and experimentation.

Wii U version includes online sharing and thousands of player-created levels.

3DS version allows portable level building and play.

Fun for both creating and playing courses.

Cons

Some player-created levels may be poorly designed or overly difficult.

Creating advanced levels can take time to learn.

The 3DS version lacks the full online sharing features of the Wii U version.

The Wii U version requires internet features to fully experience the community content.

Summary

Overall, Super Mario Maker is a unique and creative Mario game that gives players the power to become level designers. The Wii U version offers the best experience because of its online sharing and large community of creators. However, the 3DS version still provides fun level creation and portable gameplay for players who want to design courses on the go. Both versions celebrate the creativity and imagination of Mario fans, making Super Mario Maker one of the most inventive games in the series.

Just like the others in the series, this game is fun and great for kids. In the game you help Putt Putt get ready to race. In my review of the game you can learn more.

Why Putt-Putt Enters the Race?

Putt-Putt Enters the Race takes the familiar purple car on a slightly different kind of adventure compared to earlier entries in the series. While it still features the classic point-and-click structure and gentle puzzles the franchise is known for, this installment adds a stronger focus on customization and competition — all while keeping things friendly and low-pressure for young players.

The story centers around Putt-Putt entering the annual Cartown 500 race. Unlike typical racing games, this is not about fast reflexes or high-speed action. Instead, most of the gameplay involves preparing for the race. Players explore the town, gather supplies, and customize Putt-Putt before the big event. The race itself is more about participation and fun rather than intense competition, staying true to the series’ reassuring tone.

Gameplay remains rooted in simple point-and-click mechanics. Players move Putt-Putt around various areas of Cartown, interacting with characters and objects to collect items needed for race day. Tasks might include finding the right racing gear, solving small environmental puzzles, or helping other characters in exchange for needed items. The puzzles are easy and logical, designed to build confidence rather than challenge.

One of the standout features of this entry is customization. Players can change Putt-Putt’s paint color and add fun accessories before the race. For young children, this creative element can be especially exciting. Being able to personalize the main character adds a sense of ownership and involvement that wasn’t as prominent in earlier games. It also increases replay value, as children may want to replay just to try different color combinations or accessories.

The world of Cartown feels lively and interactive, filled with cheerful characters who speak in friendly voices. As with other games in the series, nearly everything on screen can be clicked, triggering amusing animations and sound effects. This constant feedback encourages exploration and keeps children engaged even when they aren’t actively solving puzzles.

The tone remains consistently positive. There are no fail states, no time limits, and no penalties. Even the concept of a race is presented in a supportive way. Winning is less important than participating and having fun, reinforcing healthy messages about effort and sportsmanship. This makes the game especially comforting for younger players who may feel anxious about competition.

Visually, the game maintains the bright, cartoon-style graphics typical of the series. The art style is colorful and expressive, though clearly from an earlier era of PC gaming. The animations are simple but charming, and the upbeat music helps maintain an energetic yet relaxed atmosphere.

Replayability is enhanced by small randomized elements. Item locations and certain puzzle solutions can change between playthroughs, which prevents the game from feeling entirely predictable. The customization options also give children a reason to revisit the game.

However, like the other Putt-Putt titles, the game’s strengths are closely tied to its simplicity.

The puzzles are very easy, and older children may complete the game quickly. The overall length is fairly short, particularly with adult guidance. While the customization feature is enjoyable, it is somewhat limited compared to modern games that offer more detailed personalization systems. Additionally, the race itself is not an action-heavy event, so children expecting a traditional racing experience might be surprised by the slower pace.

Even so, these aspects align with the series’ design philosophy. The goal is not to create high-stakes gameplay but to provide a gentle, welcoming introduction to problem-solving and interactive storytelling.

This game is up to 1-player on Steam/PC.

Pros

Fun customization options for Putt-Putt.

Safe, no-fail gameplay environment.

Clear, positive message about sportsmanship.

Bright and colorful cartoon visuals.

Simple puzzles perfect for young children.

Fully voiced dialogue.

Randomized elements add replay value.

Cons

The game is short and easy to complete. Puzzles may feel too simple for older players. Customization options are enjoyable but somewhat limited. The race itself is more story-focused than action-packed, which may not meet expectations for players seeking fast gameplay. Graphics and mechanics reflect the era in which it was created.

Summary

Overall, Putt-Putt Enters the Race is a cheerful and confidence-building adventure that blends light competition with creativity and kindness. While it may not offer deep challenge or fast-paced action, it succeeds wonderfully as a first adventure game for young children, delivering fun, reassurance, and a sense of accomplishment in a bright and welcoming world.

In this game, you play as Sonic, Mario and all their friends as they play Events based on the Olympic Games set in Tokyo 2020 and ones based on Tokyo 1964. It’s a lot of fun and in my review you’ll find out more!

Why Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020?

Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 on the Nintendo Switch is a vibrant and content-packed crossover that celebrates both the Olympic spirit and the long-running rivalry between Mario and Sonic the Hedgehog. As one of the more modern entries in the series, it blends traditional sports gameplay with creative twists, retro-inspired visuals, and a surprising amount of variety.

At its core, the game is a collection of Olympic events, including staples like the 100m dash, swimming, and hurdles, alongside newer additions like skateboarding, surfing, and sport climbing. Each event is designed to be easy to pick up but challenging to master, often relying on timing, rhythm, or quick reactions. The Nintendo Switch’s versatility plays a big role here—players can use button controls, motion controls with Joy-Cons, or even touchscreen inputs in handheld mode.

One of the standout features of this entry is the Story Mode, which is more ambitious than in previous games. The plot involves Mario, Sonic, and their friends being transported into a retro-style video game set during the 1964 Tokyo Olympics. This clever setup allows the game to switch between modern 3D events and charming 2D pixel-art competitions. The retro segments are especially enjoyable, offering a nostalgic throwback feel while still delivering solid gameplay. It’s a creative idea that adds depth and variety, helping the game feel more like a complete experience rather than just a collection of mini-games.

The roster of characters is another strong point. Players can choose from a wide selection of familiar faces from both franchises, including heroes, villains, and supporting characters. Each character has their own strengths, which can give them an advantage in certain events. While this adds a bit of strategy, it doesn’t overwhelm the game’s casual nature.

Multiplayer is where Tokyo 2020 really shines. Whether you’re playing locally with friends or competing online, the game captures that classic party-game energy. Quick rounds and simple rules make it easy for anyone to jump in, regardless of skill level. Motion controls, in particular, can be a lot of fun in a group setting, even if they’re not always the most precise option.

That said, the game isn’t without its flaws. While there are many events, not all of them feel equally polished. Some are genuinely fun and replayable, while others feel shallow or overly dependent on button mashing. This inconsistency can make the experience feel uneven over time.

Another issue is replay value for solo players. While the Story Mode is enjoyable, it’s relatively short, and once you’ve completed it and tried all the events, there isn’t a strong sense of progression to keep you coming back. The game is clearly designed with multiplayer in mind, so those playing alone may find it loses its appeal more quickly.

Visually, the game is bright and colorful, with lively animations and detailed environments inspired by Tokyo. The mix of modern graphics and retro pixel art gives it a unique identity within the series. The soundtrack is energetic and fitting, though it may not leave a lasting impression.

Its creative Story Mode and mix of modern and retro gameplay help it stand out, while the variety of events keeps things interesting—at least for a while. Although it doesn’t offer the deepest gameplay or the longest-lasting solo experience, it succeeds in delivering a lighthearted and accessible sports game that captures the spirit of both franchises. If you’re looking for a colorful multiplayer game with quick, competitive fun, this entry is a strong choice.

This game was our first Putt Putt game. We’ve played it it over a 100 times growing up and I hope you’ll enjoy it too. In my review you can find out more.

Why Putt-Putt Travels Through Time?

Putt-Putt Travels Through Time is one of the more imaginative and slightly more complex entries in the Putt-Putt series. While it maintains the franchise’s signature point-and-click simplicity and child-friendly tone, it introduces a creative time-travel theme that adds variety, humor, and a slightly stronger sense of adventure. Designed primarily for preschool and early elementary-aged children, the game balances educational elements with gentle problem-solving.

The story begins when Putt-Putt visits a museum and accidentally interferes with a time machine exhibit. Before he knows it, key historical items have been scattered across different time periods. To fix the timeline and restore everything to normal, Putt-Putt must travel to various eras and return each misplaced object to its proper place.

This premise gives the game a stronger narrative structure than some earlier titles. Instead of staying in one central location, players visit multiple historical settings, such as ancient times, medieval-style environments, and other playful interpretations of the past. The historical settings are lighthearted rather than realistic, keeping the tone fun and approachable for children.

Gameplay follows the familiar point-and-click style. Players move Putt-Putt through different scenes, interact with objects, collect inventory items, and solve simple puzzles to progress. What sets this entry apart is how inventory management becomes slightly more important. Players must remember which item belongs to which time period and return it correctly. While still easy, this adds a small layer of critical thinking compared to earlier games.

The puzzles remain age-appropriate and non-frustrating. There are no fail states, no timers, and no penalties for experimentation. Children are free to explore and click on nearly everything, often triggering amusing animations or sound effects. This interactive design encourages curiosity and rewards exploration beyond just completing objectives.

The time-travel theme also allows for a wide range of creative visuals. Each era has its own colorful design, characters, and interactive elements. The environments feel distinct enough to keep the adventure engaging while maintaining the cheerful art style the series is known for. The animations are simple but expressive, and the cartoon visuals remain charming despite their age.

Voice acting is once again clear and friendly, which is especially helpful for younger children who may not be confident readers yet. Dialogue is simple and easy to understand, and the tone stays positive and encouraging throughout the adventure.

One of the biggest strengths of this game is its subtle educational value. While it doesn’t present detailed historical lessons, it gently introduces the concept of different time periods and historical artifacts. Children are exposed to ideas about the past in a playful, low-pressure way, which can spark curiosity about history without feeling like a classroom lesson.

Replay value is modest but present. Some item placements can change between playthroughs, meaning the exact solutions aren’t always identical. This helps keep repeat play sessions from feeling completely predictable.

However, like other entries in the series, the simplicity that makes the game accessible can also limit its depth.

The puzzles, while slightly more involved than in earlier titles, are still very easy. Older children may finish the game quickly and wish for more challenge. The overall playtime is not very long, especially with adult assistance. Additionally, while the time-travel theme adds variety, the environments are still fairly contained and not expansive by modern gaming standards. The pacing remains slow and calm, which is perfect for younger players but may feel uneventful for others.

Despite these limitations, Putt-Putt Travels Through Time stands out as one of the more ambitious entries in the series. It expands the formula just enough to feel fresh while staying true to the franchise’s gentle and welcoming design philosophy.

This game is up to 1-player on Steam/PC.

Pros

Creative and engaging time-travel theme.

Slightly deeper puzzle structure compared to earlier games.

Safe, frustration-free gameplay with no fail states.

Encourages curiosity and light historical awareness.

Bright, charming cartoon visuals.

Fully voiced dialogue for early readers.

Some randomized elements add replay value.

Cons

The game is relatively short and easy to complete. Puzzles remain very simple, which may not challenge older children. Exploration areas are limited compared to modern adventure games. The graphics and mechanics reflect the era in which it was made, and the slow pacing may not appeal to every player.

Summary

Overall, Putt-Putt Travels Through Time is a delightful and imaginative adventure that adds a clever twist to the classic Putt-Putt formula. With its friendly tone, creative settings, and gentle problem-solving, it remains an excellent choice for young children beginning their gaming journey — especially those who enjoy imaginative themes and light educational elements.

Why Mario & Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games?

Mario & Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games on the Nintendo 3DS is a unique entry in the long-running crossover series featuring Mario and Sonic the Hedgehog. While the series is known for its party-style sports gameplay, the 3DS version takes a slightly different approach compared to its console counterpart, offering a more portable-focused and story-driven experience.

At its core, the game is a collection of Olympic-themed events, ranging from track and field to more specialized competitions like BMX and gymnastics. The 3DS version stands out by including over 50 events, which is actually more than the Wii version in terms of raw variety . These events are designed to take advantage of the 3DS hardware, incorporating touch controls, microphone input, and motion features. This gives the gameplay a fun, experimental feel, as each event tries to do something a little different.

One of the biggest highlights of the 3DS version is its Story Mode. Unlike many sports party games, this mode introduces a narrative where players must clear a mysterious fog threatening London before the Olympic Games begin . While the story itself is simple and lighthearted, it adds a sense of progression and purpose that helps tie all the events together. It also encourages players to try a wider variety of activities instead of just replaying their favorites.

Gameplay-wise, the experience is very much a mix of quick mini-games. Some events feel responsive and satisfying, especially those that rely on timing and rhythm. Others, however, can feel a bit awkward due to the reliance on different control methods like blowing into the microphone or rapidly tapping the touchscreen. This inconsistency is one of the game’s biggest drawbacks—it can feel “hit or miss” depending on the event .

Another notable feature is how characters are handled. The game includes a large roster divided into different categories, with each character having strengths suited for certain events . However, not all characters can participate in every event, which can feel limiting at times. While this adds a layer of strategy, it may frustrate players who simply want to use their favorite character in every competition.

Visually, the game is colorful and lively, making good use of the 3DS’s 3D effect. The environments are based on real London Olympic venues, but they’re stylized in a way that fits the Mario and Sonic universes. The music is energetic and fitting, though not especially memorable.

In terms of replay value, the game does a decent job. The large number of events, combined with multiplayer options, gives players plenty to do. However, because most events are short and somewhat simple, the experience can become repetitive over time—especially for older players.

Difference Between the 3DS Version and the Wii Version

The 3DS and Wii versions of Mario & Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games are actually quite different experiences. The Wii version focuses more on party-style gameplay, featuring modes like “London Party,” which plays like a board game with mini-games mixed in . It also includes “Dream Events,” which are imaginative, over-the-top versions of Olympic sports set in Mario and Sonic-themed environments.

In contrast, the 3DS version leans more toward single-player content and portability. It includes a dedicated Story Mode (which the Wii version lacks in the same form) and emphasizes quick, bite-sized gameplay sessions suited for handheld play. The control schemes also differ significantly—the Wii uses motion controls, while the 3DS relies on buttons, touch, and other handheld features.

Another key difference is structure. The Wii version allows players to freely choose events in a more traditional party format, while the 3DS version often organizes events through progression systems and character groupings. Overall, the Wii version feels more like a social party game, while the 3DS version feels more like a solo-friendly mini-game collection with added narrative elements.

It shines most when you’re playing casually or enjoying the Story Mode, but it doesn’t quite reach the same level of excitement as its console counterpart. If you’re looking for a portable, content-rich sports game with plenty of variety, it’s definitely worth trying. However, if you prefer a more social, party-focused experience, the Wii version may be the better choice.

This game was a lot of fun like the rest of the series. In the game you have to rescue baby zoo animals! In my review for Putt-Putt Saves the Zoo, you’ll find out more about the game!

Why Putt-Putt Saves the Zoo?

Putt-Putt Saves the Zoo is widely considered one of the strongest entries in the Putt-Putt series, combining the franchise’s signature point-and-click simplicity with a slightly more structured and goal-driven adventure. Designed for young children, the game maintains the same welcoming tone and accessible gameplay as previous titles while offering a more focused objective: rescuing baby zoo animals before the big zoo opening.

The story begins with Putt-Putt volunteering at the local zoo on the day before it opens to the public. Things quickly take a turn when several baby animals wander off and become lost throughout the zoo grounds. It’s up to Putt-Putt to explore the zoo, solve small puzzles, and safely return each baby animal to its proper habitat.

The central objective—finding and rescuing the missing animals—gives the game a stronger sense of purpose compared to some earlier entries in the series. Instead of loosely gathering items to complete a personal goal, players now have a clear mission that feels meaningful. Young players often feel motivated by helping others, and rescuing baby animals adds an emotional and engaging hook.

Gameplay sticks to the familiar point-and-click format. Players move Putt-Putt between zoo areas, interact with objects, collect inventory items, and solve simple environmental puzzles. For example, players might need to find a way to cross an obstacle, unlock a path, or use an item creatively to help an animal return home. The puzzles remain intentionally easy but feel slightly more layered than in earlier games, making this entry a bit more engaging while still remaining age-appropriate.

One standout feature is the zoo setting itself. Each habitat area has its own theme, visuals, and interactive objects. The environments feel lively and colorful, with plenty of clickable animations and sound effects. As in other Putt-Putt games, nearly everything reacts in some way when clicked, encouraging curiosity and exploration. Children are rewarded not just for solving puzzles but for simply interacting with the world around them.

The baby animals themselves are adorable and expressive, which adds charm and warmth to the experience. Helping each one feels rewarding without ever being stressful. Importantly, there are no fail states or time limits. Players can explore at their own pace, experiment freely, and never worry about making irreversible mistakes.

The voice acting is clear and friendly, which helps young players who may not yet be strong readers. Dialogue is simple and easy to follow, and the tone remains positive throughout. The music fits the playful zoo atmosphere, staying upbeat without becoming distracting.

Replay value is also improved in this entry. The locations of baby animals and certain items can change between playthroughs, meaning the game isn’t exactly the same every time. This adds a small but meaningful layer of freshness when replaying.

However, like the rest of the series, the game’s simplicity may limit its appeal beyond its target age group.

While the puzzles are slightly more involved than earlier entries, they are still very easy. Older children may solve challenges quickly and finish the game in a short amount of time. The overall length is modest, and once players understand the general structure, subsequent playthroughs become much faster. Additionally, while the zoo is charming, the exploration areas are contained and not especially large by modern gaming standards. The visuals, though colorful and expressive, reflect the era in which the game was created.

That said, these limitations are intentional design choices rather than flaws. The game is carefully crafted for preschool and early elementary-aged children, and it succeeds beautifully within that goal.

This game is up to 1-player on Steam/PC.

Pros

Clear and motivating objective (rescuing baby animals).

Safe, frustration-free gameplay with no fail states.

Bright, colorful zoo environments.

Adorable characters that encourage empathy.

Simple puzzles appropriate for young children.

Randomized elements add replay value.

Fully voiced dialogue helps non-readers.

Cons

The game is relatively short and can be completed quickly. The puzzles are very easy, which may not challenge older players. Exploration areas are limited compared to modern adventure games. The graphics and mechanics show their age, and experienced gamers may find the gameplay repetitive.

Summary

Overall, Putt-Putt Saves the Zoo stands out as one of the most engaging and polished entries in the series. It combines gentle problem-solving, lovable characters, and a meaningful objective into an experience that feels both comforting and rewarding. For young children just beginning their gaming journey, it remains an excellent and memorable adventure.

Why Ransom of the Seven Ships?

Nancy Drew: Ransom of the Seven Ships is one of the more unusual entries in the long-running Nancy Drew adventure game series. Developed by Her Interactive, the game takes the familiar point-and-click mystery formula and places it in a tropical setting filled with shipwrecks, puzzles, and hidden secrets. While it delivers some memorable moments and a strong sense of isolation, it also stands out as one of the more divisive titles in the series.

The story begins with Nancy Drew traveling to the Bahamas to visit her friend Bess Marvin. However, things quickly take a turn when Bess is kidnapped, and Nancy must follow a series of clues left behind by the culprit. The stakes feel higher than usual for a Nancy Drew game, as the mystery centers around a ransom and the safety of a close friend rather than a more typical theft or secret. This setup creates a sense of urgency that carries throughout the game.

One of the most notable aspects of Ransom of the Seven Ships is its setting. The game takes place on a remote island, surrounded by shipwrecks and tropical waters. This environment gives the game a unique atmosphere compared to other entries in the series. There’s a feeling of isolation and quiet exploration that can be both relaxing and slightly eerie. Searching through abandoned ships and uncovering hidden clues adds a sense of adventure that fits well with the mystery theme.

However, the same isolated setting also leads to one of the game’s biggest drawbacks: a lack of characters. Unlike many other Nancy Drew games, which feature a cast of suspects to interact with, this game has very few characters present. Much of the investigation is done alone, which can make the world feel empty at times. While this design choice supports the feeling of isolation, it also removes one of the series’ most enjoyable elements—interviewing suspects and piecing together their motives.

Gameplay follows the classic point-and-click style, with players solving puzzles, collecting items, and exploring different areas of the island. The puzzles themselves are a mixed experience. Some are clever and satisfying, especially those involving navigation and environmental clues. Others, however, can feel tedious or repetitive, particularly when they involve trial-and-error or require a lot of backtracking.

Another interesting element is the inclusion of sailing and navigation mechanics. Players must travel between different locations using a boat, which adds variety to the gameplay. While this is a nice idea in theory, it can become a bit cumbersome in practice, especially when you need to revisit the same locations multiple times.

Scary things wise, this game isn’t really scary. They have some skeletons and bats which may be sort of creeper but not scary plus there are no mummies or ghosts.

Visually, the game does a decent job of capturing its tropical setting. The environments are colorful and detailed enough to feel immersive, even if the graphics are somewhat dated by modern standards. The sound design helps enhance the atmosphere, with ocean waves and ambient noises adding to the sense of place.

Despite its strengths, the game is often remembered for its controversial elements. Certain character portrayals and design choices have been criticized over time, which can affect how the game is viewed today. This doesn’t completely overshadow the gameplay, but it’s something that players should be aware of when approaching the game.

In terms of replay value, Ransom of the Seven Ships is fairly limited. Once you’ve solved the mystery and completed the puzzles, there isn’t much reason to return unless you want to revisit specific moments or try to improve your completion time.

How We Test Games

For testing games we use a Ryzen 7 1700x CPU, AMD RX580, running on Win 10. Tests are done with up to 5 players. We take turns playing and evaluating games.

This game is only 1-player and it’s for PC/MAC. We’ve been playing together on two computers on the Steam version for this game.

Whenever possible we play multiple players. We use a Nintendo Switch firmware version 2H. Hardware includes Joy-con and Pro controller on a large screen TV. We also use a Nintendo 2DS, DS XL.

Pros

Unique tropical island setting with a sense of adventure.

High-stakes story involving a kidnapping.

Some creative and satisfying puzzles.

Strong atmosphere with exploration of shipwrecks.

Adds variety with sailing/navigation mechanics.

Cons

Very small cast of characters, making the game feel empty.

Some puzzles can be tedious or repetitive.

Navigation system can become frustrating over time.

Limited replay value.

Contains controversial elements that may affect enjoyment.

Summary

Overall, Nancy Drew: Ransom of the Seven Ships is a bold and different entry in the series that tries to shake up the usual formula. Its isolated setting and higher-stakes story help it stand out, but the lack of characters and uneven puzzle design hold it back from being one of the stronger titles. It’s a game that’s worth experiencing for its unique approach, especially if you’re a fan of the series, but it may not be the best starting point for newcomers.

Putt-Putt Goes to the Moon is the second in the series of Putt Putt games, we love them all and this one is short and sweet like the first. In my review for the game, you’ll learn more.

Why Putt-Putt Goes to the Moon?

Putt-Putt Goes to the Moon is another charming point-and-click adventure starring the lovable purple car, Putt-Putt. Designed primarily for young children, the game blends gentle problem-solving with a whimsical outer space setting. As one of the early entries in the Putt-Putt series, it builds on the same child-friendly formula as the first game but adds a more imaginative and adventurous twist by sending players beyond Earth.

The story begins when Putt-Putt launches a homemade rocket ship and ends up on the moon. Once there, he quickly learns that he can’t return home without collecting the necessary parts to rebuild his rocket. This sets up the main objective: explore the lunar landscape, meet quirky characters, and gather the items needed to make it safely back to Earth.

The gameplay follows a simple point-and-click structure. Players move Putt-Putt across various screens, interact with objects, and collect inventory items. The puzzles are intentionally easy, designed to encourage logical thinking without causing frustration. For example, players might need to help a moon character solve a small problem in exchange for an item, or figure out how to access a new area by using something they’ve already collected.

One of the game’s strongest qualities is its creativity. The moon environment is playful rather than realistic, filled with colorful alien-like vehicles and imaginative scenery. Instead of presenting space as dark or intimidating, the game portrays it as friendly and welcoming. The characters Putt-Putt meets are humorous and kind, reinforcing the series’ positive tone.

Like other Putt-Putt titles, there are no fail states. Children can’t lose, run out of time, or make permanent mistakes. This creates a safe learning environment where experimentation is encouraged. If a child clicks on something random, they’re often rewarded with a funny animation or a silly sound effect. Nearly every object reacts in some way, which keeps young players engaged and curious.

The voice acting is clear and upbeat, helping early readers follow along with the story. The dialogue is simple and easy to understand, and characters speak slowly enough for children to process what’s happening. The music fits the lighthearted sci-fi theme, adding a sense of adventure without ever becoming overwhelming.

Visually, the game uses bright, cartoon-style graphics similar to other entries in the series. The animations are expressive, though simple by modern standards. While today’s children are used to high-definition 3D games, the colorful 2D art style still carries a nostalgic charm and remains visually appealing in its own way.

Replayability is modest but present. Some item placements and small puzzle solutions change between playthroughs, which adds a bit of freshness. However, once a child understands the main structure of the game, future runs become quicker.

That said, the simplicity that makes the game accessible can also be limiting.

The puzzles are very easy, and older children may find them repetitive or lacking challenge. The overall length is fairly short, especially if an adult is guiding the experience. Additionally, while the moon setting is imaginative, the number of areas to explore is somewhat limited compared to modern adventure games. The pacing is slow and calm, which is ideal for young players but may feel uneventful for others.

Still, Putt-Putt Goes to the Moon succeeds beautifully as an early childhood adventure game. It encourages problem-solving, listening skills, and exploration while maintaining a gentle and reassuring atmosphere. The sense of accomplishment children feel when helping Putt-Putt rebuild his rocket and return home is rewarding without being stressful.

How We Test Games

For testing games we use a Nintendo Switch firmware version 2H.
Pros

Safe, frustration-free gameplay with no fail states.

Creative and friendly outer space setting.

Simple puzzles ideal for preschool and early elementary players.

Fully voiced dialogue for non-readers.

Encourages curiosity and exploration.

Cheerful tone and positive interactions.

Cons

The game is short and can be completed quickly. Puzzles are very easy, which may not hold the attention of older children. The graphics and mechanics show their age compared to modern titles, and the scope of exploration is somewhat limited. The slow pace, while calming, may feel repetitive for some players.

Summary

Overall, Putt-Putt Goes to the Moon is a delightful and imaginative adventure designed perfectly for young gamers. It combines creativity, kindness, and gentle problem-solving into a memorable first journey into both space — and gaming.

Anyway, We enjoyed this game a lot and in my review, you’ll find out more.

As a sequel, it builds on an already strong foundation, offering a wide variety of modes, characters, and ways to play—but it also reveals some cracks when it tries to add complexity where it may not be needed.

At its core, the game is about matching and clearing pieces, either by forming lines (Tetris) or chaining colored blobs (Puyo Puyo). What makes this series stand out is how it blends the two systems together. Players can choose to specialize in one style or try hybrid modes like Fusion, where both systems exist on the same board. This creates a surprisingly deep experience that can be as simple or as challenging as you want it to be.

One of the biggest strengths of Puyo Puyo Tetris 2 is the sheer amount of content. There are tons of modes to explore, including classic Versus matches, Party mode with chaotic item effects, and skill-testing challenges like Big Bang. The game also features a robust multiplayer component, allowing up to four players locally or online, which keeps things exciting and competitive. Online play is generally smooth, making it easy to jump into matches with others around the world .

The Adventure Mode adds a story-driven layer that ties everything together. It follows a quirky cast of characters as their worlds collide once again, leading to a series of puzzle battles. The story is lighthearted and full of humor, with lots of playful dialogue and personality. While it’s not the main reason to play, it does a good job of introducing different modes and mechanics in a structured way .

The most notable new feature is Skill Battle mode, which adds RPG-like elements to the puzzle gameplay. Players build a team of characters, each with stats and special abilities, and battle opponents by dealing damage through combos instead of just trying to top them out. It’s an interesting twist that adds strategy and variety, and it can feel exciting when everything clicks together .

However, this is also where the game stumbles a bit. The RPG mechanics—like leveling up characters and managing equipment—can feel out of place in a puzzle game. Instead of enhancing the experience, they sometimes slow it down, forcing players to spend time in menus or grind for better stats just to keep up. This can make the game feel more complicated than it needs to be .

Another issue is that, as a sequel, it doesn’t drastically change the formula. Many of the modes and features will feel very familiar to anyone who played the first game. While that’s not necessarily a bad thing—the core gameplay is still fun—it can make the experience feel more like an expansion than a major step forward .

Visually, the game is bright, cheerful, and full of personality. The characters are expressive, the animations are smooth, and the overall presentation is polished. The soundtrack is upbeat and energetic, though some sound effects may become repetitive or even slightly annoying during long play sessions .

Replay value is one of the game’s strongest aspects. With so many modes, challenges, and multiplayer options, there’s always something to do. Whether you’re playing casually with friends or trying to master advanced techniques, the game offers plenty of opportunities to improve and have fun.

It excels in variety, charm, and replayability, especially when played with others. However, its attempt to add deeper RPG mechanics doesn’t always pay off, and longtime fans may find it a bit too similar to its predecessor. Still, if you enjoy puzzle games—or want a fun, competitive experience with friends—this is an easy recommendation.

Putt-Putt Joins the Parade is a classic point-and-click adventure game originally designed for young children, and it remains one of the most charming and beginner-friendly titles in the edutainment genre. Developed in the early era of kid-focused PC gaming, the game introduces players to Putt-Putt, a cheerful purple convertible car who dreams of joining the town parade. What follows is a lighthearted adventure filled with small tasks, colorful characters, and simple puzzles designed specifically for early learners.

The story is straightforward and easy to follow. Putt-Putt wants to participate in the parade but first needs to prepare properly. Players explore a friendly town environment, interact with other vehicles and characters, and complete small objectives that help Putt-Putt get ready. The structure is open enough to encourage exploration but guided enough that children rarely feel lost or overwhelmed.

Gameplay revolves around classic point-and-click mechanics. Players move Putt-Putt around the screen, click on objects to interact with them, and collect items that help solve gentle puzzles. These puzzles are intentionally simple, focusing more on observation and logical thinking rather than difficulty. For example, players may need to find missing parts, help other characters with small favors, or complete basic problem-solving tasks. The game encourages curiosity, as nearly every object in the environment reacts in some way when clicked.

One of the strongest aspects of Putt-Putt Joins the Parade is its accessibility. There are no fail states, no time limits, and no penalties. Children can explore freely without fear of losing progress. This makes it an excellent first video game for very young players who are still learning how games work. The voice acting and narration are clear and friendly, which helps non-readers follow along. Many objects and characters speak when clicked, reinforcing listening skills and engagement.

Visually, the game uses bright, cartoon-style graphics. The art is simple but expressive, with colorful backgrounds and animated details that keep the town feeling lively. While the graphics show their age compared to modern titles, they still hold a nostalgic charm. The music is upbeat and cheerful, perfectly matching the parade theme and maintaining a positive tone throughout the adventure.

Another highlight is replayability. Certain items and small puzzle elements can change locations between playthroughs, which keeps the experience slightly fresh each time. For a children’s game, this adds surprising longevity.

That said, the game is intentionally simple — and that simplicity may not appeal to everyone.

The puzzles are very easy, even by children’s game standards, so older kids or experienced players may find the gameplay repetitive or lacking challenge. The overall playtime is also fairly short, especially for adults guiding a child through it. Additionally, while the town is interactive, the scope is limited compared to modern open-world or story-driven children’s games. Some players may also notice that the mechanics are basic and slower-paced compared to newer educational titles.

Despite these limitations, Putt-Putt Joins the Parade succeeds beautifully at what it sets out to do: provide a safe, welcoming, and confidence-building introduction to video games. It promotes exploration, listening, light problem-solving, and kindness without pressure or frustration. The positive tone and encouraging atmosphere make it especially comforting for young players.

Cons

The game is very short and can be completed quickly, especially with adult assistance. The puzzles are simple to the point that older children may lose interest. The graphics and mechanics reflect its age, which may feel outdated compared to modern children’s games. Additionally, the limited scope means there isn’t a huge amount of content beyond the main objective.

Summary

Overall, Putt-Putt Joins the Parade is a wonderful starter adventure game for preschool and early elementary-aged children. It’s gentle, positive, and thoughtfully designed to build confidence in young players. While it may not offer depth for older audiences, it remains a classic example of how simple design can create a meaningful and joyful first gaming experience.
