LEGO The Incredibles – Review

We like the movie and it’s sequel and of course who doesn’t like LEGOs? When we found out they had a game with both we had to try it. The game is loads of fun! in my review of LEGO The Incredibles you’ll find out more.

Why LEGO The Incredibles?

LEGO The Incredibles is an action-adventure game that combines the humor and creativity of LEGO games with the superhero world of The Incredibles movies. Players step into a LEGO version of the Parr family and their allies as they battle villains, solve puzzles, and protect the city. Like many LEGO games, it mixes platforming, light combat, exploration, and puzzle-solving with a playful tone that makes it enjoyable for players of many ages.

The story is based on both The Incredibles and Incredibles 2. Interestingly, the game begins with events from the second movie before going back to retell the story of the first film. This structure allows players to experience the action-packed moments of both movies while following the adventures of the superhero family.

Players control several characters from the Parr family, each with their own special abilities. Mr. Incredible uses his incredible strength to lift heavy objects and smash obstacles. Elastigirl can stretch and reach faraway switches or platforms. Violet can turn invisible and create protective force fields. Dash moves extremely fast, allowing him to run across water or activate speed-based puzzles. Jack-Jack has a variety of unusual powers that can help in different situations.

These different abilities are used to solve puzzles throughout each level. Many areas require switching between characters in order to progress. For example, one puzzle might require Dash’s speed to activate a switch, followed by Mr. Incredible lifting an object, and then Violet protecting the team with a shield.

Combat is also part of the gameplay. Players fight groups of enemies using attacks and special abilities. While the combat is simple, it fits the lighthearted LEGO style and allows players to defeat villains while exploring the environment.

Outside of the story levels, the game includes a large open city area inspired by the movie’s setting. Players can explore different districts, discover collectibles, and complete optional missions. This free-roaming mode adds extra gameplay beyond the main story and encourages players to revisit areas with new characters and abilities.

One enjoyable feature of LEGO games is the large number of characters available to unlock. LEGO The Incredibles includes many characters from the movies as well as other Pixar-inspired characters. Unlocking these characters gives players more abilities to experiment with during exploration.

The visual style captures the bright and colorful look of the films while maintaining the playful LEGO aesthetic. Buildings, vehicles, and characters are all made from LEGO bricks, which gives the world a fun and toy-like feel. The animations are expressive, and the cutscenes recreate famous moments from the movies with LEGO-style humor.

The game also includes cooperative multiplayer. Two players can play together locally, working as a team to solve puzzles and defeat enemies. This cooperative mode makes the game especially enjoyable for families or friends playing together.

However, the game does have some limitations.

One drawback is that the gameplay follows the typical LEGO formula very closely. While this style is fun, players who have played many LEGO games may feel that the gameplay is somewhat familiar or repetitive.

Another issue is that the combat system is fairly simple. Battles with enemies usually involve basic attacks, which can become repetitive over time. Players who prefer more complex action mechanics might find the combat less exciting.

The open city area, while large, can also feel somewhat empty at times. Although there are missions and collectibles scattered around, some parts of the city may feel less detailed compared to the story levels.

Despite these minor issues, the game still delivers a fun superhero adventure.

How We Test Games

For testing games we use a Nintendo Switch firmware version 2H. Hardware includes Joy-con and Pro controller on a large screen TV. Tests are done with up to 5 players. We take turns playing and evaluating games.

Whenever possible we play multiple players. We also use a Nintendo 2DS, DS XL, and for PC games we use a Ryzen 7 1700x CPU, AMD RX580, running on Win 10. This game is up to 2-players on one Nintendo Switch.
