How to Create a Game Rotation Schedule for Variety in Play
Creating a game rotation schedule is a great way to keep things fresh and interesting for your family. Because even the best games get a little stale if you play them every session. In my experience, our favorite games are even better when we skip them every few family gaming sessions. As the saying goes variety is the spice of life.
Adding variety to your family gaming sessions ensures everyone has a good time and leads to everyone looking forward to game night. This way each person’s favorite game is added to the rotation.
Making a Plan
Here are some practical steps to help you create a game rotation schedule for variety in play:
- Take inventory of the games you have available. Make a list of all the games you have access to, including board games, card games, video games, puzzles, and any other types of games you enjoy playing.
- Consider the interests and preferences of everyone involved. Which are the most and least favorite games in the rotation. Adjust the schedule by taking into account the age, skill level, and preferences of the players.
- Create a schedule by determining how often you want to rotate the games. Create a schedule that assigns a different game to each play session. This could be weekly, bi-weekly, monthly, or whatever timeframe works best for your group. We have at least one day per week dedicated to family game night. Plus one night when possible.
- Mix it up. Ensure that your game rotation schedule includes a variety of different types of games to keep things interesting. Even the least favorite game should make one appearance. Include strategy games, party games, cooperative games, and competitive games to cater to different preferences.
- Plan for flexibility. Keep in mind that schedules can change and games may need to be adjusted or swapped out. Be prepared to make changes to the rotation schedule as needed.
- Communicate the schedule to those involved. Share the game rotation schedule with the players so they know what to expect and can prepare accordingly. I’ve found this helps build excitement and anticipation for upcoming game nights
- Evaluate and adjust. After implementing the game rotation schedule, take the time to evaluate how well it is working. Solicit feedback from the players and make adjustments as needed to ensure that everyone is enjoying the variety of games being played.
- Make sure you have all the necessary supplies ahead of time. Whether it’s tables, chairs, or snacks every game has a few extras to make it better.
Without any plan a fun game night isn’t likely to happen. You have to at least loosely plan a game night for it to come off right. Following these steps to ensures a good time for everyone involved.
Summary
There is a lot of preparation that goes into making any game a success. Making a plan that involves a game rotation that takes into account everyone is bound to make it exciting and fun for everyone involved.

I’m David M. I’ve been playing video games a long time, my pong game was fire. Now, my kids run circles around me but we always have a good time. We mostly play party and family games. Strategy and battle games are still among my favorites. I like writing about games almost as much as I do playing them. My favorite games are: Moving Out 2, Out of Space and Overcooked All You Can Eat.
