Mario Kart Double Dash – Review

I have not played Mario Kart Double Dash but I’ve read about it and watched playthroughs on it as well, and I know that it’s Toadette’s first appearance in the Mario series which is exciting, and there’s special a two-character kart system new to the game. Anyway, in my review you can learn more!

Mario Kart Double Dash - Review

Why Mario Kart Double Dash?

Mario Kart: Double Dash!! for the Nintendo GameCube is one of the most unusual and memorable games in the Mario Kart series. Instead of having one character drive a kart by themselves, the game introduces a unique two-character system where each kart has a driver and a partner. This simple idea completely changes the way races work and gives the game a personality that makes it stand out from other Mario Kart titles. I liked Mario Kart: Double Dash!! a lot, and one of the biggest reasons is that it introduced Toadette to the Mario series.

Toadette’s introduction is one of the most exciting parts of the game for me. She appears as a playable character alongside Toad, giving players another cute and cheerful character to race as. I really liked having Toadette in the game because she quickly became a memorable part of the Mario cast. Seeing her debut in Double Dash!! makes the game especially interesting for fans of the character. It isn’t just a fun racing game—it is also an important part of Toadette’s history in the Mario franchise.

The biggest gameplay feature is obviously the two-character kart system. Each kart has a driver in front and a partner in the back. Players can switch between the two characters whenever they want. The driver handles the steering and acceleration, while the partner holds a special item. This means that choosing the right character combination can actually affect how you approach a race.

The special items are another major part of the game. Certain characters have their own unique items that can give them an advantage. For example, some characters can use particularly powerful or unusual attacks. This gives the character selection system more depth than simply choosing whoever you like best. You can think about whether you want a particular special item or simply choose your favorite characters.

The two-character system also makes Double Dash!! particularly fun for multiplayer. Two players can even work together in the same kart, with one person driving while the other handles items. This is a fantastic idea because it turns racing into a cooperative experience instead of always being about competing against each other. It can be especially fun with friends or family because both players have something important to do.

The game includes a variety of colorful courses inspired by the Mario universe. There are traditional tracks with straightforward layouts as well as courses featuring hazards, jumps, sharp turns, and unusual obstacles. The courses have plenty of personality, and learning their layouts becomes an important part of getting better at the game.

The game modes also provide plenty of variety. The standard Grand Prix mode lets players compete through cups of races, while Versus mode allows players to choose specific courses. There are also battle modes where players can compete in arenas rather than traditional races. These modes help give the game more replay value and make it useful for both solo and multiplayer sessions.

The Battle Mode is particularly fun because the focus changes from racing to attacking opponents and surviving. The arenas provide different environments for battles, and the special items can make matches unpredictable. This is a great option when you want something different from regular racing.

Visually, Double Dash!! has a colorful and cheerful presentation. The characters are expressive, the tracks are full of personality, and the GameCube hardware allows the game to look considerably more detailed than earlier Mario Kart games. The music is also energetic and memorable, fitting the chaotic racing action nicely.

However, the game does have some drawbacks. The biggest is that the two-character system can take some getting used to. Players accustomed to traditional Mario Kart games may initially find it strange to have two characters in one kart. The system is creative, but it can also feel complicated until you understand how switching and special items work.

Another drawback is that the game is missing some features that players may expect from later Mario Kart titles. The roster and track selection are smaller than what is available in newer games, and there aren’t as many customization options. The game is more focused on its unique two-person mechanic than on offering an enormous amount of content.

How We Test Games

For testing games we use a Nintendo Switch firmware version 2H. Hardware includes Joy-con and Pro controller on a large screen TV. Tests are done with up to 5 players. We take turns playing and evaluating games.

Whenever possible we play multiple players. We also use a Nintendo 2DS, DS XL, and for PC games we use a Ryzen 7 1700x CPU, AMD RX580, running on Win 10. This game is up to 4-players on one Nintendo Switch.

Summary

Mario Kart: Double Dash!! is one of the most distinctive games in the Mario Kart series. Its two-character system gives it an identity that no other entry quite replicates, and the ability to cooperate with another player in the same kart makes multiplayer especially memorable.

For me, one of the biggest reasons I liked the game is Toadette. Her introduction to the Mario series makes Double Dash!! particularly special. I love that players can race as her and experience the game that first brought her into the franchise. She adds a cheerful personality to the roster and makes the game even more enjoyable.

Even though the game has fewer tracks, characters, and customization options than newer Mario Kart games, it makes up for that with its creative gameplay and memorable multiplayer. Mario Kart: Double Dash!! remains a fun and distinctive racing game that is especially worth checking out for Mario fans and Toadette fans. Its unique mechanics, fun courses, special items, and excellent multiplayer make it a memorable entry in the series—and Toadette’s debut makes it even more special.
