Star Stable Online Halloween Event Review

Why the Halloween Event?

The Halloween event in Star Stable Online is one of the most unique and dramatic seasonal events in the game. Each year, Jorvik transforms into a darker, more mysterious version of itself, with spooky decorations, eerie music, and a heavy focus on supernatural themes. While this makes the event stand out compared to others, it also creates a very different experience that won’t appeal to everyone.

One of the most noticeable aspects of the Halloween event is its atmosphere. The game shifts from its usual bright and friendly tone to something much darker and more intense. Areas are filled with fog, glowing pumpkins, haunted visuals, and unsettling sound design. For players who enjoy spooky or horror-inspired settings, this can be incredibly immersive. The developers clearly put a lot of effort into making the environment feel distinct and memorable.

However, this darker tone is also one of the event’s biggest drawbacks—especially for players who prefer the usual cozy and cheerful feel of Star Stable Online. Personally, I don’t enjoy this shift very much. The game loses some of its charm when it leans so heavily into creepy visuals and themes. Instead of feeling fun and relaxing, the event can feel uncomfortable or even stressful to play.

This is especially true for younger players. Star Stable Online is generally known as a friendly and welcoming game, but the Halloween event pushes into territory that may be too intense for some kids. Certain areas, characters, and sound effects can feel genuinely eerie, which might make the experience less enjoyable for players who are sensitive to scary content. While it’s not outright horror, it’s definitely a noticeable change in tone that not everyone will appreciate.

In terms of gameplay, the event offers a mix of activities, including themed quests, races, and special challenges. Many of these revolve around collecting items, exploring spooky areas, or interacting with Halloween-themed characters. Some of the quests are creative and fit the theme well, adding to the sense of mystery and adventure.

That said, the gameplay can feel repetitive over time. A lot of the activities involve similar mechanics, such as collecting items or repeating tasks to earn rewards. While this is common in seasonal events, it can feel more noticeable here because the atmosphere is so intense. Instead of feeling relaxing, the repetition can make the event feel more like a grind.

The rewards are another mixed aspect. The Halloween event usually offers unique cosmetics, including dark-themed outfits, tack, and accessories. These are well-designed and fit the spooky theme perfectly. For players who enjoy gothic or Halloween-style customization, this is a major highlight. However, if you prefer brighter or more traditional styles, the rewards may not feel as appealing.

There is also a strong sense of exploration in the event. New or altered areas encourage players to look around and discover hidden details. This can be fun, especially for those who enjoy immersive environments. But again, the darker tone may limit how enjoyable this exploration feels for some players.

How We Test Games

For testing games we use a Nintendo Switch firmware version 2H. Hardware includes Joy-con and Pro controller on a large screen TV. Tests are done with up to 5 players. We take turns playing and evaluating games.

Whenever possible we play multiple players. We also use a Nintendo 2DS, DS XL, and for PC games we use a Ryzen 7 1700x CPU, AMD RX580, running on Win 10. This game is up to 1-player but with online players on PC and Mobile devices.

Pros

  • Appeals strongly to players who enjoy darker themes
  • Creative seasonal quests and themed activities
  • Distinctive Halloween cosmetics and rewards

Cons

  • Dark and eerie tone may not appeal to everyone
  • Can feel too intense or scary for younger players
  • Gameplay can become repetitive over time
  • Rewards may not suit all player styles
  • Less relaxing compared to other events

Summary

Overall, the Halloween event in Star Stable Online is one of the most distinctive events in the game, but it’s also one of the most polarizing. While players who enjoy spooky, atmospheric experiences will likely love it, others may find it less enjoyable. Personally, I don’t like the event very much because it strays too far from the cozy and welcoming feeling that makes Star Stable special. Younger players, in particular, may not enjoy the darker tone.

That said, for fans of Halloween and eerie settings, the event offers a memorable and immersive experience that stands out from the rest of the game’s seasonal content. Whether you enjoy it or not really comes down to how much you like spooky themes versus the usual lighthearted world of Jorvik.
