Book Travelers: A Victorian Story – Review

We love Nancy Drew so we tried Ms. Holmes and love them too, when we discovered that Big Fish Games (the maker of the Ms. Holmes games) has more than just the Ms. Holmes games we got Book Travelers: A Victorian Story to see if their other games are good and they are! Here’s my review for the game.

Book Travelers A Victorian Story - Review

Why A Victorian Story?

Book Travelers: A Victorian Story is a hidden object puzzle adventure (HOPA) that blends mystery, literature, and time travel into one imaginative experience. Developed by Elephant Games, this title is part of the Book Travelers series and brings players into the heart of Victorian London through the pages of a classic novel.

You play as a young woman who is magically transported into a Victorian-era book where literary characters and historical settings come to life. The story revolves around fixing the plot of a corrupted novel, solving a mystery, and restoring harmony to the book world. The narrative is rich with literary references, adding extra delight for fans of classic literature.

As expected from a HOPA title, the gameplay features a mix of:

  • Hidden object scenes
  • Inventory-based puzzles

The hidden object scenes are interactive and cleverly themed to the story’s setting. Puzzles range from logic-based brainteasers to creative mechanical devices. Progression feels smooth, with story beats well-paced between gameplay segments.

A special book mechanic allows players to jump between chapters or locations, serving as a hub for navigating the world and piecing together the narrative.

Visually, Book Travelers: A Victorian Story is a treat. The hand-drawn backgrounds capture the foggy charm of Victorian London and the elegance of historical interiors. Character designs are expressive, and the animations are well-polished.

The soundtrack blends classical and atmospheric music, enhancing the immersive literary mood. Voice acting is solid, helping bring characters and scenes to life.

The game includes collectibles, morphing objects, and achievements, giving completionists extra goals to aim for. A bonus chapter extends the story, offering additional puzzles and closure.

How We Test Games

For testing games we use a Nintendo Switch firmware version 2H. Hardware includes Joy-con and Pro controller on a large screen TV. Tests are done with up to 5 players. We take turns playing and evaluating games.

Whenever possible we play multiple players. We also use a Nintendo 2DS, DS XL, and for PC games we use a Ryzen 7 1700x CPU, AMD RX580, running on Win 10. This game is up to 1-players on a computer/steam.

Pros

Engaging literary-themed storyline.

Beautiful hand-drawn visuals.

Varied puzzles and hidden object scenes.

Atmospheric music and solid voice work.

Cons

May feel short for some players.

Not very challenging for experienced HOPA fans.

Summary

Book Travelers: A Victorian Story is a standout HOPA that balances storytelling, atmosphere, and gameplay beautifully. Whether you’re a fan of Victorian mysteries or just love hidden object adventures, this game delivers a memorable, bookish journey. Overall it’s a charming and thoughtful adventure for puzzle lovers and bookworms alike.
