Sonic Generations – Review

Sonic Generations is a special game made for Sonic’s 25th Anniversary. We like the game and here is my review of the game. A remastered version was also recently released called Sonic X Shadow Generations.

Sonic Generations - Review

Sonic X Shadow Generations is basically the same as Sonic Generations other than a few changes like updated graphics, different voice actors and added Chao to rescue throughout all of the levels. Plus an extra mode about Shadow.

However Sonic Generations for the Nintendo 2Ds/3Ds have different levels based on the handheld Sonic games like Sonic Advance and more. Other than that, it’s the same as Sonic Generations.

Why Sonic Generations?

Who doesn’t love a classic Sonic platformer game? This game combines how Modern Sonic games works and classic ones. Each world has two stages, one being with modern sonic and the other with classic sonic.

At the start of the game, it’s Sonic’s birthday party but then Eggman shows ups and ruins it! He also breaks the world with Time Eater so Sonic and Sonic must fix it all and rescue everyone as well.

This mix of gameplay feels fresh and makes each stage feel like a new adventure. The controls are responsive, making both styles satisfying to play, while the variety of levels offers something for every fan.

The visuals are stunning, with each level meticulously recreated with new detail and smooth animations. Revisiting iconic zones like Green Hill Zone and Chemical Plant is a joy, as the design respects the original environments while adding updated textures, lighting, and depth.

The soundtrack is a highlight, featuring remixes of classic tunes alongside new compositions that fit perfectly. From upbeat remakes of older songs to the thrilling orchestral pieces in the 3D levels, the music adds to the nostalgic vibe and energy of the game.

How We Test Games

For testing games we use a Nintendo Switch firmware version 2H. Hardware includes Joy-con and Pro controller on a large screen TV. Tests are done with up to 5 players. We take turns playing and evaluating games. This game is only 1-player though

Whenever possible we play multiple players. We also use a Nintendo 2DS, DS XL, and for PC games we use a Ryzen 7 1700x CPU, AMD RX580, running on Win 10.

Pros

Sonic Generations combines both 2D classic and 3D modern Sonic gameplay, so fans of both styles can enjoy levels that switch between the two.

Levels are beautifully crafted to pay homage to Sonic’s history while introducing updated visuals. Each stage reimagines a classic Sonic level, appealing to long-time fans with iconic scenes that feel fresh and detailed.

The game is a celebration of Sonic’s history, revisiting fan-favorite levels from previous Sonic games. This appeals to longtime fans who appreciate the callbacks and soundtrack that remixes familiar themes.

Besides the main story, Sonic Generations includes extra missions and challenges, adding replay value and providing opportunities to earn unlockable content.

Cons

The soundtrack is widely praised for featuring classic Sonic music remixes, adding to the nostalgic feel and enhancing the overall experience.

The main story mode is relatively short, and many players may find they’ve completed it quickly, especially if they’re experienced Sonic fans.

Some levels and challenges can feel inconsistent in difficulty, with certain stages being far more challenging than others, which can frustrate players.

Occasionally, the 3D camera angles can be a bit awkward, leading to missed jumps or collisions with obstacles that you can’t always see in time.

Sonic Generations is a single-player game, which limits social play and may disappoint those who enjoyed multiplayer modes in other Sonic games.

Summary

Overall, if you’re a Sonic fan, Sonic Generations is often considered one of the best modern Sonic games, thanks to its blend of classic content and updated gameplay. The visuals, level design, and classic feel bring Sonic’s best elements together, while the lack of multiplayer is minor.
