Spontuneous: Silly Multiplayer Board Game Review

Last weekend we played Spontuneous during our game day. Fair warning, there’s singing involved. So if you don’t like singing solo around friends and family then… just say the words plainly. You’ll never know if people were laughing at your singing or choice of lyrics. But you’ll have fun nonetheless.

This game has more to do with the vast library of songs floating around in your head than your ability to sing. Knowing obscure or rare lyrics gives you an edge to this game. The fewer songs people guess the better for you. And the more lyrics you know the better for you too.

Spontuneous is based on guessing which song (or songs) have the words you choose to sing, or say for the shy ones. Stumping your opponents during your turn and exposing them during theirs earns the most points.

Why This Game?

People who enjoy music will enjoy this game. Younger children might struggle appreciating this game but it’s good for most ages. In my opinion it’s best for friends and family. Strangers might not feel as comfortable participating. Anyone who enjoys board games and has a positive attitude should give Spontuneous a try.

It isn’t your typical board game but anyone who likes playing games will have fun with this game. It’s a good party game. Officially there are up to 9 players but you can have more by splitting up in teams.

How Does Spontuneous Compare to Similar Games

It’s kind of similar to Pictionary or Charades, only it uses words instead of pictures or motions. People are supposed to guess a song based on the lyrics you sing (or say). Actions or acting are optional. The main difference is the goal is to stump everyone, not have them guess.

If nobody guesses your song you advance closer to the finish. But it isn’t as easy as it sounds since they can substitute any song as long as it has the same lyrics. You’d be surprised how many songs share similar lyrics.

Spontuneous feels a lot like Charades or Pictionary since it’s a group effort and guessing is involved. All are great party games to play with friends and family.

Pros and Cons of Spontuneous

It’s one of the few games I know of that can accommodate lots of players. 9 pieces are included but you could include a couple more of your own if you wanted. There were 5 of us playing and it didn’t seem slow at all.

It’s a simple game. There isn’t much difference from one turn to the next. The creativity of each player keeps it interesting but after a game or two it isn’t nearly as exciting. It isn’t a game we could play solo for hours but including it in one of many games is best.

Summary

For this review, we give Spontuneous 7 out of 10 stars. While it’s a great game, a game involving song lyrics might not appeal to everyone. It’s level of excitement really depends on the people you play with. We had a great time, but I can see how it might not be the best choice for new acquaintances.

But among friends or family, it provides a good opportunity for some to ham it up. Or some inside jokes. Or some good laughs. If you love Charades, you should give Spontuneous a try.

Spontuneous Review brought to you by: David M.

I’m David M. I’ve been playing video games a long time, my pong game was fire. Now, my kids run circles around me but we always have a good time. We mostly play party and family games. Strategy and battle games are still among my favorites. I like writing about games almost as much as I do playing them. My favorite games are: Moving Out 2, Out of Space and Overcooked All You Can Eat.
